UTHSCSA - Department of Physiology
Physiology Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE)

PURE Summer Application Process will begin March 2008.

This is a two-month (June 2nd – July 31st, 2008) research program designed for highly motivated college undergraduate students with a genuine interest in experimental research careers in biomedical science. Undergraduates will have the opportunity to receive hands-on experience in on-going research projects under the direction of a faculty member as well as work with postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. Other opportunities include an informal “Faculty Profiles” weekly luncheon session in which faculty members will give a brief presentation encompassing their overarching research objectives and a mini-biography of how they came to be where they are now, and an informal “Contemporary Issues in Physiology” weekly luncheon journal club led by Physiology senior graduate students. At the conclusion of the summer, students will showcase the fruits of their labors to the department at a poster session.

Areas of research opportunities in the Physiological Sciences include the following:

  • Cellular and Integrative Neuroscience
  • Cardiopulmonary Function
  • Endocrinology/Metabolism

  • Molecular Physiology

  • Functional Genetics

Students will be matched to a laboratory in their area of interest, as closely as possible, to the student’s research interests and career goals.

How to apply:

Students interested in applying to the summer undergraduate research program may do so by completing and submitting the following:

  • Reference Form - Two letters of recommendation from academic faculty.  Letters should come from individuals who are familiar with the student's academic or work performance, such as a faculty member or supervisor who can comment on their suitability for this program. The downloadable cover form should be included.
  • Brief personal statement to include research interests, career goals, reasons for applying to research program and description of what you would like to get out of the summer program.
  • Official undergraduate transcript

Eligibility:

  • Student in an undergraduate science degree program and who will be returning for at least one term following the summer.

  • Applicants must have successfully completed one year in an undergraduate degree program to include at least general biology and/or introductory chemistry.

  • Grade point average of 3.0 or higher

All interested individuals are encouraged to apply; preference will be given to students who are considering applying to a Ph.D. program in the Biomedical Sciences.

Financial Assistance:

Students will receive a stipend of $3,000 for the two-month experience.  This amount will be divided into two payments, of which one payment will be distributed the first week of the program and the second during the first week of July.   Students will be responsible for travel, meals, housing and other incidental expenses. On-campus housing is not available at UTHSCSA, however housing location guidance will be provided.

Deadline:

All application materials and supporting documents must be received by March 14, 2008. Incomplete files will not be reviewed. Notification of decisions on applications will be made in early April 2008.
